Party tips for a stress-free event
Hosting a party, while extremely exciting and rewarding, can also be a stressful affair if you’re the sole person in charge of preparing the food and ensuring that everyone is having a good time. Well never fear, here are a few simple tips and tricks to help you streamline the process:
Making a list
Even if you have a good memory, the only way to be absolutely sure you haven’t forgotten any crucial party steps is by making a list. Write down all of your tasks that need to be completed with any other notes that will help you get things done.
Some people like to send out invitations online because they are a good option in a pinch. But show you took the time and effort to create something special by planning ahead and sending out customized invitations.
While you might be a great multitasker, it’s always a good idea to round up a couple of friends to take some of the weight off your shoulders. This can be as simple as having someone order the cake, be in charge of desserts, or picking someone up from the airport.
A few nights before the party, prep and cut all your vegetables and store them away for the big day. Depending on what is on your menu, cook and freeze any items that will allow for it. Casseroles, quiches, soups and stews all can be made a few days before the party.
If you’re feeling extremely overwhelmed with cooking, make your life a bit easier by including some store bought items. Whether it’s a pre-made cocktail mix or grocery store crudite, buying something already made will have you thanking yourself later.
If you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, make sure guests are seated in a place that boosts the flow of conversation. Maybe have the most friendly and outgoing person take a middle seat while the quieter folks sit near the host.
If you yourself aren’t a wine connoisseur, try sharing your menu with a boutique wine shop so its employees can let you know which wine would pair best with each dish. Or you could consult various wine pairing articles. Try consulting ‘Wine Paring 101’ from Sunset, to give you an idea of which wine to choose.
Music will set the mood for the entire evening, so be sure to create the perfect playlist. Make the playlist long enough so it wont constantly be repeating in the background. If you need some inspiration, check out this article from Chow Catering and Events that talks about all the elements to consider when creating a party playlist.
Opt for more simple decorations, that way you’ll have more time to devote to the details. Set the table with minimal accents, possibly just a bouquet of flowers and candles, like these, featured on Style Me Pretty.
